Synopsis
Based originally on a Kabuki-play, this is the tragic story of a young samurai, Nemuri Kyoshiro, who was born as the result of a rape during a black mass. Rejected by his family he is raised in a temple. The priest becomes his friend and confidant. To restrain and discipline his "evil soul" he focusses to perfect the art of the "Engetsu Sappo" sword fighting style which comes in handy in his quest for justice and revenge.

a movie series of the same name from 1960 to 1969 featured Ichikawa Raizo
I am not sure if the broadcast year is the original year of production. The series ran in the TV-Tokyo Jidaigeki Hour but this may have been a repetition. Unfortunately, the TV-Tokyo site gives no further information.
